Richardson PD - mail theft / check fraud
Posted on Dec 24th, 2008
Richardson PD is currently working several cases of mail theft / check forgery. All of the residences where mail has been stolen from are in the eastern portion of Richardson. The subjects are stealing outgoing bill payments in order to steal checks. The checks are subsequently being “washed” and altered to be made payable to these subjects. The checks are then cashed for amounts larger than they were originally written for. This has also occurred at a business where the outgoing mail was stolen from the mail room. Richardson PD has identified an organized group suspects committing these crimes.
Most victims discover this offense when they are notified of a late payment and after an audit of their checking account, find the check in question with a different payee and amount.
This chance of this crime happening can be reduced by mailing your bills at the post office and not from your own residence or place of employement.
